A/N: I just can't cut it anymore. I hope you don't mind.
Pomona watched Filius as he carefully pulled the young mandrake, now too large to be trusted with her students, from its pot and moved it to a larger one. It was their second Saturday in a row working on the project and the mandrakes were nearly ready for harvesting.
He caught her watching him and smiled as she blushed. Pomona turned back to her half of the plants, already transplanted, and pretended to work, while letting her mind drift back to the week before.
Pomona watched as Filius patted the dirt around his final mandrake and ran a hand lovingly over a leaf, a gesture she recognized as one of her own. For a man who had confessed to disliking Herbology so much he had actually skipped classes as a student at Hogwarts, he was surprisingly wonderful with her plants and at home in her greenhouses
If only he felt as at home in other parts of her life.
Pomona shook her head, letting the stray thought fly away as she focused on Filius once more. He was watching her and she smiled a thank you for all his hard work. He said something she missed because of the protective ear muffs they wore. Gesturing toward his muffs, she started to take hers off. Her elbow knocked over one of the freshly transplanted pots and as they both lunged for it, she lost her balance. Filius tried to catch her, but succeeded only in cushioning her fall.
She looked down at him, blushing and stammering an apology he could not hear. He removed his ear muffs and leaned upward, staring into her eyes, with a glance toward her lips.
At the moment she had been sure he was going to kiss her, Filius had suddenly stiffened. She glanced at the direction he was looking to find Argus standing there, shock written all over his face. He had made some comment, which Filius had refused to repeat, before picking up his package, Mrs. Norris’ weekly supply of catnip, and leaving as quickly as he came in. It had only been a momentary distraction, but the moment was gone. She had carefully got up, removed her ear muffs, and the two had pretended nothing had happened.
A week had gone by and still they had not talked about the moment. After much thought and a few heart to hearts with her friends, Pomona had decided that the possibility of Filius in her life was well worth the risk to their friendship. She smiled what she hoped was an alluring smile and removed her ear muffs, only to smear potting soil across her forehead. Perfect, she thought, as she tried to wipe it off, only to leave more on her nose.
Filius chuckled as he took off his ear muffs. “Here, let me.” He took out his handkerchief and leaned closer. Pomona felt herself flush as she remembered how sure she had been of his intentions the previous week. His hand moved to brush her cheek. “Pomona,” he said softly and she knew.
Biting her bottom lip slightly, she leaned into the coming kiss, only to curse as she lost her balance on her stool knocking them both over. She looked down at Filius, trying to hold back her laughter, until she saw the mirth in his eyes. She let loose a giggle and Filius kissed the tip of her nose.
“This is just perfect. All we need now is Argus to-“
“Oh Merlin’s nut, they’re at it again.” Argus looked down at Mrs. Norris as he picked up his package. “Like bunnies, I tell you!” He let himself out as quickly as he had entered, but not before both Pomona and Filius were laughing.
He took her face in his hands and smiled, “Shall we try again?”
She smiled as she leaned into his hands.
“Third time’s a charm?” she said and answered her own question with a kiss.
