Always Forward
A/N: *scrape, scrape, scrape.* That’s me, picking at the rust. It’s been forever since I’ve written anything, much less fanfic. Forgive the rust that has accumulated. I’m hoping this will help me get back into the swing of things writing-wise. As always, nothing belongs to me, I make no money at all, unfortunately, characters belong to J.K. Rowling, and the song is Taylor Swift’s “Come in with the Rain.” I do hope that you enjoy!! –Lizz (Ro)
“Minerva, it’s just too dangerous.”
I could go back
To every laugh
But I don’t want to
Go there anymore
Five words. Five simple words had destroyed the perfect happiness that she had thought she’d never find. They had finally, after too many years to count, taken their relationship past the “friends” stage, and for several months she had felt complete. But you-know-who was steadily gaining power again, and Albus had made the executive decision that their relationship was a hazard to them both without even discussing it with her.
And I know all the steps
Up to your door
But I don’t want to
Go there anymore
Minerva set her quill down, and gazed out the window for a moment, watching the raindrops race down the window. Her paperwork was finished, and two weeks ago she would have hand delivered it to Albus, hoping to steal a kiss, or maybe even enough time for a quick game of Chess. She hadn’t set foot in his office since that night, and she wasn’t about to start now. With a wave of her wand, the papers folded themselves and sailed out the door.
Talk to the wind
Talk to the sky
Talk to the man with the reasons why
And let me know what you find
I’ll leave my window open
Cause I’m too tired at night
To call your name
Just know I’m right here hoping
That you’ll come in with the rain
Minerva made her way from her office to her rooms to prepare for another long, sleepless night. Her bed used to be cozy during weather like this. Now it seemed unnecessarily large, an optical illusion that taunted her every night. The rain was still coming down, but it had slowed to a sprinkle. A simple charm would keep it from coming in and pooling on the floor. Minerva murmured the spell as she opened the window a crack. Returning to bed, she put out the lights and listened to the steady hum of the rain.
I could stand up
And sing you a song
But I don’t want to
Have to go that far
And I, I’ve got you down
I know you by heart
And you don’t even know
Where I start
Albus sat at his desk, staring at the papers in his hand, but not reading them. He saw only Minerva’s handwriting. He knew her well enough to know that it was not as neat as it usually was. He supposed that was his fault as well. Albus was well aware of the state Minerva had been in for the past two weeks, even though she had made a point of avoiding him. It was killing him, hurting her this way. It was for the best, he told himself. She just didn’t understand, and he didn’t know how to make her see.
Talk to yourself
Talk to the tears
Talk to the man who put you here
And don’t wait for the sky to clear
I’ll leave my window open
Cause I’m too tired at night
To call your name
Just know I’m right here hoping
That you’ll come in with the rain
A questioning chirp from Fawkes brought Albus out of his reverie, and he realized that he had been staring into the bathroom mirror, toothbrush in hand but not moving, for several long minutes. He turned to Fawkes, to reassure the bird that he was all right, but Fawkes cocked his head to the side, as if to say, “are you, really?”
I’ve watched you so long
Screamed your name
I don’t know what
Else I can say
“Am I?” Albus wondered aloud, turning back to look into the mirror. A tired old man in loud polka dot pajamas stared back at him. His hair was a dull gray, and his eyes, without the sparkle, were a terribly ordinary blue. The toothbrush clattered from his hand to the marble countertop, but Albus was already halfway out the door.
I’ll leave my window open
Cause I’m too tired at night
For all these games
Just know I’m right here hoping
That you’ll come in with the rain
Minerva was awakened by the sound of a slow creak. She lit the room with a wave of her wand and rubbed her eyes. Albus was sitting on her windowsill, dripping water on the floor, looking just as startled as she felt.
“Strange dream,” Minerva mumbled, turning over.
“No, Min. Not a dream,” Albus said, moving from the window to sit on the edge of her bed.
Minerva sat up, and reached out to touch his face. Her hand came away wet. “Not a dream. Albus, what…?”
“I’m so sorry, Minerva. I was a fool. I thought I was doing the right thing by pushing you away, but it was killing us both. Please, forgive me? And let me be a part of your life again?”
She sat in stunned silence for what seemed like an eternity to both of them. “I… yes, Albus. Of course. I missed you.”
Tears welled in her eyes. “I never want to go back to feeling like that again.”
Albus pulled her into his arms and held her tightly. “No,” he murmured against her hair. “We won’t go back. Only forward. Always forward.”
