Title: Simple
Rating: E for Everyone I think
A/N: I think Drama is right for this. Let me know if you think otherwise.
Heartache was never simple, Filius reflected as he changed out of his dressrobes. He had to smile as he caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. Albus would have appreciated the twinkling stars Filius had charmed onto his underrobe that morning, a final tribute to one of his dearest friends.
"F-filius?" He could hear the long day and grief in Pomona's voice as it cracked over his name.
"I'm in here, 'Mona." Before he could say more, she was at the door to his bedroom. Tears ran down her cheeks. Her hair, which had been perfectly coiffed only an hour before was a mess. A beautiful mess, he thought.
"Filius, I-" With that she broke down again, sobs wracking her body.
He put his arms around her and led her to his bed, holding her as they sat together. Carefully, he brushed her hair away from her face as he held her to his chest.
"I feel so guilty," Pomona turned her head and buried her face into his robes as she spoke, muffling her voice.
"Guilty? This was not your fault. There was nothing we could have done to stop him." They all knew of Albus' decision, but that had not made his death any easier to accept.
"I know that." She struggled to sit up and Filius reluctantly let go of her, his hands drifting down to cover hers. "But..." She looked down at their hands. Her voice was barely a whisper as she spoke. "I was jealous of her. Of them. That sounds horrible I know, but I was and now I feel like-"
"It's not your fault. You didn't wish this on Minerva or Albus; I know you." He brushed at her tears with his thumb as he tipped her chin up to look into her eyes. "I'm sure anyone who knew of Albus and Minerva's relationship was envious of it. I certainly have been."
She shook her head sadly. "But, you don't understand. I don't know what to say to her. She has lost so much and I'm her friend! I should know what to say. Instead, all I can think is that if Minerva didn't deserve a lifetime of love, what chance do I have?" Her brown eyes sparkled with tears. Anguish and guilt marked her face.
"Oh, Mona." As he reached for her, she fell into his arms. "Things happen, but that doesn't mean he doesn't love her and she doesn't love him. You deserve that and more." This time he continued to hold her when she moved to sit up, rocking her as he murmured nonsense words of comfort. As her tears stopped, she turned to face him and after a moment of hesitation, he gently brushed his lips over hers. She smiled softly, her eyes still sparkling with tears, then leaned up to kiss him, filling his heart with hope.
Heartache was never simple, but then neither was love and, Filius decided as he gathered his love close once more, it was simply worth the risk.
