I'm sure we've all read the quote from JKR in which she says she was surprised when she first saw the film Flitwick, because he looked goblin-esque, and she'd always pictured him as just a little man. She later says that he is part goblin, but way, way back, like a great-great grandfather, or something of that sort. So how did you picture him before you saw the movies? Did your mental image of him change as a result of the movie version? I picture him as just barely scraping four-feet tall, maybe even a bit shorter, with a proportionate build (just a "little man"), normal features (no goblinny ears!), fluffy white hair (not long, but not short, either) that gets easily mussed, especially when he gets enthusiastic about something, a high widow's peak (but not bald or balding, though), longish, fluffy sideburns, wire-rim glasses (which I imagine he calls his "specs"), deep, richly brown eyes, straight white teeth, which show a lot because he is a pretty cheerful fellow who likes to smile and laugh, and a dapper dresser with smallish feet and strong hands with long fingers. I always imagine he might play a real musical instrument . . . perhaps a violin/fiddle, or something of that sort -- or maybe a piano with special pedals so he can reach them. . . . And as much as I was surprised at the first movie-version of Flitwick (probably not as much as JKR, was though! he is her creation, after all!), I thought the second incarnation as the bizarrely-dapper person with the black hair parted down the middle and slicked down was dreadful. Didn't like that one at all. Maybe they'll eventually get it right . . . . (but, of course, your opinion may vary from mine!) I look forward to hearing what others think!

I much prefer the original idea of just a very little man. If I think about the first film Flitwick, much like that apart from the globin-esque features. But I fear that it will take a while to revery back to my own image of him rather than the original one from the films because it's upset my images of so many characters. I figure that the more fanfiction I read with him in it the quicker it will return to normal

I am not sure how I originally pictured him.... I guess as just a short man, never really thinking about the goblin part of him.... A lot of the characters were hard for me to imagine for some reason.

I think I see him like the Flitwick in the first movie, but without the goblin-like features. I didn't even know it WAS Flitwick in the subsequent movies until I double checked on IMDB.

I imagined him not as goblin-y as the movies made him: thin white hair in tufts on his head, wire glasses, easily excited (at least they kept that up in the movies, lol), spidery sort of fingers (but not too Voldemort-esque), and quite short (of course). JKR was surely shocked at the movie version, but she hasn't made a huge fuss like some author's would.

I always pictured him as my chemistry/physics teacher in high school. He was under 5 feet tall. You didn't want to make him angry, because he could be very stern, but also did that whole "I'm disappointed in you" thing that made me want to dig a hole and bury myself. But, in general, he was a very happy fun guy who was intensely devoted to teaching and to science.
I see Flitwick as about 4'9" and proportionate. White hair (though a dark auburny-brown when he was younger) that is longish, but not to his shoulders by any means. Full beard that is kept trimmed. Deep, dark, expressive brown eyes that are slightly overtaken by bushy eyebrows. very well dressed, but not really flashy. Rounded wire glasses that slide down his nose when he gets excited, which happens often. Fit from his years as a duelist, but with a bit of a pudgy stomach with his age. I also thought he should be a musician and usually think of him on the piano or a cello, though it would have to be one of those they start you on when you are young to be the right size.
I didn't mind the first Flitwick, if they hadn't done the goblin features. The second one looks like a serial killer. I think I read somewhere (I would have to search for it though) that in the 3rd movie, the director just wanted Warwick Davis in the movie and hadn't consciously made him Flitwick, just the choral director. Has anyone else seen that?

Has anyone else seen that? Yeah, I read that, too -- but then he decided to go ahead and say it was Flitwick, and kept him that way, or something of that sort. Kind of an "accidental Flitwick"! (Sounds like the opposite of a Wronsky feint, or whatever that Quidditch move is called! Hahaha!)

My mental image of Fil is pretty close to Madam's...lol
I always hear him talking with quite a high pitched squeaky voice and I agree that he would be very excitable...Falling off his pile of books when a student produced a good charm that sort of thing. I imagine him being a bit scruffy (that's why I see him and Mona fitting so well together) and although he is a dueling champion, a bit clumsy at times.

He is so dead to me. So dead. And just when I was on the verge of forgiving him, too! I sort of picture him as the first incarnation, but a little less wrinkly and goblin-esque. But I do picture him as a little gobliny man, just not quiet as extremely so as he was in the first movies. And without the weird mouth. I love Fillius, though. He's one of my favorites. I was reading PoA yesterday, and when he walked in with Minerva (See! Proof! They were friends all through school!) and ordered his cherry soda, I thought... Awwww... Fillius.

Two words: Mini Einstien.
A four and a half foot tall version of Mr. E=mc2.

Two words: Mini Einstien. A four and a half foot tall version of Mr. E=mc 2. Ya know, I think that's very close to how I've pictured, him, but mostly 'cause of the hair-thing I have always imagined. And the very dark, soulful eyes. I don't think I see the mustache exactly the same way, though. In fact, usually I don't see him as having a mustache, though sometimes I do. Probably the influence of the movie on my mental image of him. In "Impressing Filius," I have Pomona admiring his fluffy hair, which, in "Falling for Pomona," I have Filius bemoaning and finally putting a hat over when it won't behave. *grin*

I picture him just like in the first movie. I think he's perfect that way, no matter what JKR says. I hate his features in the subsequent movies, especially when he is treated like a fool in the fourth one. He's a Ravenclaw, for Merlin's sake!

I'm not a fan of the later Fil either, Saki. But the Goblin/Elf/Troll-ish thing weirds me out. lol
